The Role

This position of Hardware Support Engineer is an entry level position within our Customer Support Team. The main purpose of the role is to provide support to our customers who are experiencing hardware-related issues with the Pointy service; this is done predominantly via phone calls and emails. There is also responsibility for configuring Pointy boxes for stores that have a non-USB barcode scanner, as well as occasionally working in the lab to build externally-powered Pointy boxes for stores that have high-powered barcode scanners. There are always side-projects going on alongside the day-to-day work too.

Please note that the hours for this role will be 1pm – 9pm (Monday – Friday) as you will mainly be dealing with US based customers.

Curiosity, focus, initiative and a friendly attitude paired with problem-solving skills and patience are good traits/skills for this role as you have to communicate with the retailers to diagnose the issues before you can try to solve them.

Main Tasks

  • Inbound and outbound technical support for customers (mix of emails and calls)
  • Assisting the customer support team with the Installation, maintenance and fault finding of the Pointy hardware.
  • Some work in the lab, making adapters and custom made equipment.
  • Technical support for the office.

Essential Requirements and Qualities:

  • Qualification or experience in Engineering, Software and/or Electronics.
  • Technically adept
  • Basic understanding of cellular telecommunication systems.
  • Basic understanding of serial and digital communications.
  • Good understanding of electrical and electronic principles.
  • Comfortable with working as part of a team as well as on one’s own initiative.
  • Curiosity, focus and a hard-working, positive attitude.
  • Organisation, attention to detail and an ability to strictly adhere to processes.
  • Excellent problem solving skills are a must
  • Friendly customer focused attitude
  • A high level of commitment to an intense fast moving and ever changing start-up environment

Bonus Requirements:

  • Experience dealing with bespoke protocols.
  • Experience with POS systems.
  • Experience with retail systems and software.
  • Previous experience in a small retail or family business.
  • Previous entrepreneurial experience or time spent in early stage start-ups.
  • Leadership and team management potential.
